Become an Alumni Ambassador on Social Media!

Are you interested in helping the Alumni Association spread the word on social media? We need Social Media Ambassadors who have a network of Red Dragons with whom they can share their excitement for alumni activities all year long.

Overview: The Alumni Association maintains an active presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn; ambassadors help disseminate and generate content for these alumni social media platforms. Social Media Ambassadors help us reach more alumni and serve as a valuable asset to the Alumni Association’s communication efforts.

Roles and Responsibilities: We ask that Ambassadors commit to a one-year term, with the option to renew each year. Ambassadors will be asked to promote a social media initiative selected by the Alumni Association every one to two months, in addition to sharing content from SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association social media accounts that interest them and that they believe would resonate with alumni in their social networks. Ambassadors also are expected to maintain contact with Office of Alumni Engagement Staff, including monthly emails and quarterly conference calls, to collaborate with staff and other ambassadors.

Activities and Programs: The time commitment for this volunteer role is about an hour per month. Ambassadors help promote events, spread news, and engage with fellow alumni through online social networks. Ambassadors can accomplish this in many ways:

  • Like, comment on, share, and retweet posts from alumni social media accounts.
  • Tweet from alumni events and encourage others to do the same.
  • Post photos from events on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
  • Participate in and promote Take Over events.
  • Encourage their alumni network to follow alumni social media accounts.
  • Initiate and join discussions on the SUNY Oneonta Alumni LinkedIn group.

FAQs

  • Do I need to have thousands of followers to become a Social Media Ambassador?
    Not necessarily. We want Ambassadors to have influence within the SUNY Oneonta alumni community. An alumnus/a could have many followers but they may not be connected with other SUNY Oneonta alumni. We value both the size and quality of an Ambassador’s network.
  • Do I need to be active on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn?
     While the ideal Ambassador would have influence on all three main social networks, in addition to others like Instagram and Pinterest, we also know that some alumni may be extremely influential on Facebook but not have a Twitter account. We will consider each applicant’s individual strengths.
  • How often do I need to actively promote Alumni Association social media posts?
    We encourage Ambassadors to be as active as possible given their work and home life schedules. Ambassadors should be active once a week at a minimum; however, during our high priority events we need everyone to be as active as possible. We estimate about an hour per month commitment.
  • Do I need to change my privacy settings? No! The idea is that you will help spread SUNY Oneonta information to your followers. We’re not asking that you change any settings – just share information in your voice, to your peers.
