"Passing Through the Pillars: Celebrating 125 Years of SUNY Oneonta History"
Greater Oneonta Historical Society
183 Main St., Oneonta, NY

"Passing Through the Pillars: Celebrating 125 Years of SUNY Oneonta History" will open at the Greater Oneonta Historical Society's History Center at 183 Main Street on Friday September 5. The new exhibit looks at the College’s history, including the establishment of the Oneonta Normal School and its development from a teacher training institution into a four-year liberal arts college. There will be highlights from the administrations of seven presidents. Accompanying the exhibit, a slideshow will provide a record of the College's expansion under the presidencies of Dr. Charles Hunt and Dr. Royal Netzer. Historic images will offer a glimpse of academic life and extracurricular activities, and document what it was like to be a student throughout the College’s history. Traditions including the "Paper Hat Assembly" and "Candlelight Ceremony" provide a sense of continuity over the many years of changes. The exhibit will feature photographs, scrapbooks, plates, commencement programs, class schedules, memorabilia, and yearbooks from the Alden Room, which houses the treasures of the College archives. Named after Jessica Alden, College Librarian from 1912 to 1944, the Alden Room is located on the third floor of SUNY Oneonta's Milne Library and is open for research by appointment. In Honor and Good Faith: A History of the State University College at Oneonta, New York, and In Honor and Good Faith: Completing the First Century, 1965-1990, serve as the reference works for this exhibit. This two-volume history was written by Dr. Carey Brush, College Historian and former Vice President for Academic Affairs. The exhibit, prepared by Heather Beach, Mary Lynn Bensen, Elise DeAndrea, Lyndsie Robinson, and Anne Winchester of Milne Library, will run through Saturday November 8.

In recognition of the college’s 125th anniversary, the SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association will honor alumni who have distinguished themselves through their careers, their service to their communities, and their commitment to our college.

Selected from nominations by faculty, staff and alumni, these individuals will represent just a few of the thousands of alumni who contribute in countless ways to the college, to their communities, and to their professions.

On September 5th join us at the Hunt Union Waterfront for a reception to honor these outstanding alumni and celebrate 125 years of excellence at SUNY Oneonta.

Registration for this event opening soon.
