Reunion Weekend Poetry Slam with Special Guest Kristen Tomanocy `11
The Living Room, Hunt Union
8 p.m. – 10 p.m.
A poetry slam is a performed poetry competition judged by five members of the audience. Poets have three minutes to present one original poem. No props, costumes, or musical accompaniment are allowed. The judges will then score the piece anywhere from 0 to 10 using decimals, evaluating both the poet’s performance and the content of the poem. Points will be deducted for violating the time limit. The reunion slam is open to the first 10 alumni who sign up at the stage. The top poet wins great prizes.
The poetry slam was founded during the mid 1980’s by Marc Smith a construction worker in Chicago who ran poetry shows which were a mix of part stand-up comedy and part-jazz. On a whim one night, he added judges to the mix, and since then the art form has flourished from national tournaments, television via HBO Def Poetry Jam and Broadway shows.
Kristen Tomanocy is a feminist who loves good poetry, white wine, big earrings, and having her hair called a "lioness mane". She is the winner of the 2007 Bright Hill Press Poetry Competition in Oneonta in the Nature category. Her poetry is featured in Static and Other Lungless Things, a Penmanship Press book featuring The Intangible Collective. In 2009, Kristen was the first ever female to become the SUNY Oneonta Grand Slam Champion. Kristen has featured her poetry at the Cafe Connection in Norwich, alongside T.J. Natole in their duo group "The Paroled Fable Thieves" at the 2009 SUNY Binghamton Grand Slam, and at the Women’s Club of Albany for the Women’s Writes series. She was a member of the 2008 SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Team and ranked 4th in the Nation at the ACUI Collegiate National Poetry Slam in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is also the President of the SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Association and a member of the 2010 and 2011 SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Teams. She has a book of poetry entitled Warpaint Etiquette. Kristen plans to go into education for poetry, English, and theatre.
